"Once I got the number three, I realised that a hero of mine, the late, great, Dale Earnhardt, was also number three in NASCAR, so I had pretty good reasons to have it as my favourite number and I was just happy to go back there and give it some recognition."

Sweet to see an Australian Formula 1 driver honor the Intimidator. Hopefully we can see F1 races start like this.

It's funny how the best of the best typically know what the others are up to, even if it's an entirely different discipline. I would not be surprised at all if Dale Sr. was saddened by the passing of Senna or knew about Schumacher's first championship with Ferrari.

I know we like to compartmentalize our allegainces with things like "Well I follow F1 and WRC but I would never be caught dead watching NASCAR!" and I'm guilty of that myself. But when driving is your career, the best do look at who "the best" are in the other series. You never know what you can learn or when an opportunity may arise. Case in point - I'll bet you Kimi has a new respect for the NASCAR drivers after he tried, and failed, to produce a decent showing in his stint in America.

I was at Daytona when DE raced in the 24 hours with Little E. Word is big E wanted to go Le Mans when he retired from NASCAR. Waltrip ended up doing it and I wonder if it was a bit of a nod to his old friend.

Two things:

1) I will now be rooting for Daniel Ricciardo this year

2) I now have a reason to watch F1... even with all the dildo noses.

Ricciardo is one of those good guy drivers you can't help but to root for. I don't think I've seen a single shot of him without a smile on his face.
